The most useful device in any laser lab; the Universal Beam Splitter*. Variable transmission from 10% to 98%. Variable reflectivity from 90% to 2%.
  • Constant 90 degree reflection

Universal Beam Splitter The Universal Beam Splitter mounts in a standard 1" diameter mirror mount.
Universal Beam Splitter As the angle is adjusted, the transmission of the UBS varies from about 98% down to about 10%
Universal Beam Splitter The beam is always reflected at 90 degrees and transmitted straight through regardless of the angle of the adjustment
Universal Beam Splitter There are two versions of the Universal Beam Splitter. One is designed for visible light between 400nm and 900nm. Another is designed for the near infrared between 800nm and 1750nm.

Solid silicon etalons are interesting because the high index of silicon (3.4 depending on wavelength) creates a reasonably high finesse without any coatings. The temperature sensitivity of silicon can also be useful (or problematic). These etalons are often used to monitor the wavelengths of long wavelength lasers.

Thick Uncoated Germanium Etalons Mid IR Germanium Etalons

Solid Germanium etalons also have a high index (~4.0 depending on wavelength) that creates a reasonably high finesse without any coatings. They also remain transmissive farther out into the infrared that silicon etalons, the germanium etalon will still provide a decent signal at a wavelength of 14um. The temperature sensitivity of germanium is similar to silicon can also be useful (or problematic). These etalons are often used to monitor the wavelengths of long wave lasers.

Solid YAG etalons are also handy because the high index of YAG material (about 1.8 depending on wavelength). This creates a reasonably high finesse without any coating; this makes yagalons excellent for mode selection in high power solid state lasers.
