Drilling
The drilling of small holes is one of the most common applications of the excimer and CO2 lasers. Lasers can be focussed to very small spots, the very small holes in ink jet nozzles or the micro-vias in smart phone printed circuit boards. The clean walls created in the this fast 'cold' process have no melting or charring.

CO2 laser drilled PCB SEM picture of a beautiful round 50 micron hole drilled in a printed circuit board. These via holes are drilled through a top copper layer, through the board insualtion down to the copper layer below. Once the hole is plated it creates an electrical connection between tracks on different board layers.
Excimer laser drilled holes
An excellent example of the quality and precision achieved by the excimer laser drilling plastic. This is 75 micron thick polyimide with 50 micron diameter holes.
